The Malaria Program employs Active Case Detection (ACD) as a strategy to control malaria in outbreak situations and in border-crossing populations. The most recent ACD was done in Vila Brasil (District of Saramacca) where an unexpected increase of malaria cases was reported. During the ACD the Malaria Program personnel visit all localities in the designated area and provide diagnosis and if needed treatment to all people encountered, with or without symptoms. This methods allows for the detection of asymptomatic malaria cases.
